National Metadata
This table provides metadata for the actual indicator available from Australia closest to the corresponding global SDG indicator. Please note that even when the global SDG indicator is fully available from Australian statistics, this table should be consulted for information on national methodology and other Australia-specific metadata information.
The information in this dataset includes five variables, one for each of the five sub-indicators within the indicator.
a) Forest area annual net change rate: this data contains information about forest area change for the reference period 2005-2010 (source: National Inventory Report 2010) – this date is consistent with other sub-indicators here.
b) Above-ground biomass stock in forest (reported in Australia’s Country Report to the FRA 2015), and forest area (2010), reported as tonnes/hectares (source: National Inventory Report 2010).
c) Proportion of forest area located within legally established protected areas: this data contains information on areas identified as protected in categories IUCN I-IV and total area of forest (source: Australia’s State of the Forests Report 2013).
d) Proportion of forest area under a long-term forest management plan: this dataset contains information on areas of forest with long term forest management plans as a percentage of the total forest area (source: Australia’s State of the Forests Report 2013).
e) Forest area under an independently verified forest management certification scheme: this dataset includes areas of forest certified by the Australian Forest Certification Scheme and by the Forest Stewardship Council (source: Australia’s State of the Forests Report 2013).
Note: The UN FAO Global Forest Resources Assessments (FRA) will be the ongoing mechanism by which SDG indicators 15.1.1 and 15.2.1 will be populated after the Voluntary National Review with statistical annex is submitted in 2018. ABARES prepares Australia’s Country Report to the five-yearly FRA, with the next FRA due for release in 2020. Australia’s Country Report is underpinned by data published in the five-yearly series Australia’s State of the Forests Reports published by ABARES and prepared in collaboration with state and territory governments.
