Data has been drawn from a national indicator or dataset and is an approximation of the UN SDG Indicator. We will work to develop an Australian dataset that meets the globally agreed methodology for this UN SDG Indicator.
Suicide mortality rate
Suicide remains the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44. In 2018, the overall age-standardised suicide rate was 12.1 per 100,000 in Australia.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics, Causes of Death, Australia, 2018 reports the preliminary figure for death due to suicide in 2018 at 3,046.
